Classic Period
- The 1940s and 1950s were the "classic period" of film noir. Classic film noir developed during and after World War II, taking advantage of the postwar ambience of anxiety and suspicion.
- Many of the classic films noirs were low-budget supporting features without major stars, in which "moonlighting" writers, directors and technicians found themselves relatively free from the typical big-picture constraints.
- Films that were considered good incorporated elements of flattering soft lighting, deluxe interiors, and elaborately built exterior sets.
- Examples: Stranger on the Third Floor, Touch of Evil, M, This Gun For Hire, Shadow of a Doubt
